2025 SCCC Year in Review

Reflection on the year that has passed with so many rides, so many events, so many friends!

We get to experience something beautiful that not too many other groups or organizations can ever appreciate! We meet people from different ways of life, from generations of ages and from a wide variety of work backgrounds.

Not only that, but we motivate, inspire, challenge, all along while we are making new friendships and strengthening old ones. Additionally, our mental and physical health being protected, secured, and procured by our weekly actions of putting on our colorful capes of fitness and lifting our leg to mount our trusty two-wheeled stallion to, once again, ride off into the sunset on another adventure.

This is why we ride! Let's carry this spirit into 2026!

Check out our year 2025 on YouTube.

Emily's Success Story

In early 2014, I tipped the scale at 296 pounds.  I felt terrible both physically and mentally, but also was in denial about having a significant weight issue.  I had already had one back surgery in 2012, and, when I had two discs rupture in 2014, the neurosurgeon refused to operate because of my weight.  That was the eye opener.  For weight loss, my primary care physician suggested that I consider gastric sleeve surgery in June 2014.

Within 6 months I had lost more than 100 pounds and in total lost 134 pounds.  I wanted to take up running, but unfortunately the toll the extra weight had put on my knees just wouldn't allow it.  I had knee surgery and the surgeon said I would never run again.

Years before, I had participated in a bike ride for the MS Tour To Tanglewood in NC, so I picked up that old bike and that's about the time I found the Florida Freewheelers and then Carlos Melendez said "You should ride with the Seminole Cyclists!" And I have been pedaling the miles with SC ever since!

Life isn't linear, and my weight loss hasn't been either.  In 2020, I gained 40 pounds back, and I still have a sugar addiction and can't give up the Coca-Colas!  When I moved back down to Florida in 2021, it was with the primary goal of getting back to the cycling community and also where the weather is more conducive to outdoor activities nearly year-round. I am now back down to my goal weight and feel fantastic!

Those that know my story amongst the Seminole Cyclists have always been encouraging and supportive-never judgmental!  I am forever grateful for the positive reinforcement I receive, and will always do my best to pay it forward!

Lorenzo’s Success Story

This is my story:

I was watching the Seminole Cyclist Group passing through the back of my house every Saturday ...and every time I said, I will join that group!

Weighting almost 300lbs, it was just a wish until I decided to take actions. I worked on a plan with my doctor that allows me to reduce 33% of my body weight in aprox one year time frame (May 2024 to March 2025). In December last year I bought a trek aluminum bike which start to let me think that I can do it.

Before even being capable, in March 2025, I purchased my first Carbon fiber bike. I started riding on the trail alone, but my pacing was like 15mph, and I read again and again the Seminole cyclist website that says that the Bnice group starts at 19 mph 🥺.  I keep going and talk to Margarita Calderon and Cesar, and she said... You will be ok, do you have a helmet? Yes? Join us! 🙂 She doesn't know how important her words were to me to take the first step.

All the rest went along the way not missing a single ride of the group trying to ask first everybody how difficult was the Tuesday ride, WWW, Thursdays etc. Week after week getting stronger but also learning safety rules which is one of the priorities for me to ride.

A month later after joining the group, I purchased the second bike ...ah! My Bianchi yes! And believe it or not; I'm still married after buying 3 bikes in less than 4 months 🤣. Couple of nights in the dog's house, but everything worked out well after that. 😆

So here I'm a year and a half later with 100lbs less and doing close to 300 miles every week on my bikes, weather permitting.

I joined the club in March 2025 and not only have let me improve my physical condition but also allowed to know and make new friends that I'm enjoying the time together riding the bikes.

Thank you for being part of the group that inspire me and keep me in effort to get better every day!

Cyclist of the Month - January 2026

‘DOMESTIQUE DIESEL’ IS CYCLIST OF MONTH

Generosity is at the heart of the Seminole Cyclists. Every time someone takes a long pull in the wind, stops to aid a rider with a mechanical, or when a club member donates money, merchandise or time to our charities, it’s largely about the giving.

No one in our club embodies those giving qualities more than Marco Santiago. That’s why Marco is the Seminole Cyclists’ Cyclist of the Month for January 2026.

Anyone who has ridden with Marco knows he rolls up with a warm smile and a friendly attitude. But he has much more to give. He is an incredibly strong, safe and motivational rider. Put him on the front of a pace line and he pulls like an engine that never runs out of fuel. Many a day, riders are thankful they were on the “Marco Train.” He is a domestique diesel!

However, it’s not all about power and pace for Marco. He is rider genuinely concerned about the overall safety of whatever group he joins. He is an advocate for following the most basic safety protocols of group riding: keeping a tight, straight line; calling out debris in advance; steering around dangerous obstacles; and stopping to help riders in distress.

None of this is surprising, given Marco’s model of family and faith first. Fortunately, that mindset expands onto our club rides. And it spills into the generosity Marco shows by regularly making donations to SC’s annual parties and to our juniors program. The Farmasi gift kits at our club parties are donated by Marco and his wife, Michelle. And Marco also donates his time to our club, helping marshal our juniors’ training rides, keeping them safer.

Team members such as Marco make our club special. On behalf of the SC Board of Directors, please join us in congratulating Marco Santiago as our January Cyclist of the Month. He will receive a $20 gift card to a club sponsor of his choice, or $20 toward his fund raising for the 2026 Tour de Cure in Lake Nona.

Congratulations, Marco!
