February is American Heart Month

A nationwide observance that spotlights cardiovascular disease and the need for more lifesavers. First proclaimed in 1964 by President Lyndon B. Johnson, American Heart Month began as a national call to take charge of your heart health—a mission that continues today. Join the Nation of Lifesavers and learn CPR today.

Eating healthy and staying active are some of the most important things you can do to prevent heart disease and improve your personal well-being. Whether you’re trying to lose weight, stay active as you age or shake-up your normal exercise routine, the American Heart Association is here to help you understand fitness basics and the impact physical activity - or lack thereof - can have on your health.

Target Heart Rates Chart

What should your heart rate be when working out, and how can you track it? Our simple chart will help keep you in the target training zone, whether you want to lose weight or maximize your workout. Find out what normal resting and maximum heart rates are for your age and how exercise intensity and other factors affect heart rate.

  • How do I get my heart rate in the target zone?
  • What is a resting heart rate?
  • Is resting heart rate different by age?

Be Well

How do you want to live? Along with eating right and being active, real health includes getting enough sleep, practicing mindfulness, managing stress, keeping mind and body fit, connecting socially, and more.

Heart Attack, Stroke and Cardiac Arrest Symptoms

YOU ARE THE FIRST RESPONDER UNTIL HELP ARRIVES

In a cardiac emergency, every minute counts. CPR can double or even triple chance of survival. Protecting your family, your friends, and your community starts with being prepared. This American Heart Month, learn CPR.

Seminole Cyclists offer a yearly free CPR instruction for our members to attend. Seminole County Fire Department has been a great resource to give our cyclists their CPR training. Be the hope that your fellow cyclist is responded with.

Greg's Story

February is a special month to help us get in tune with ourselves - specifically our heart! Besides the standard "Valentine's Day" and celebrating love and affection for our loved ones, we should also celebrate love and affection for ourselves. This means checking our heart state of health.

Greg's Story

Eight years ago, February 11th, a chilly early Saturday morning. I was doing what I normally do - hopping on my bike for an early morning weekend ride with the Signature Saturday crew! I rode to the ride with my brother, but instead of chit-chatting with the other arrivals, we wanted to keep our legs warmed up. We both rode around the Fresh Market parking lot. Everything seemed to going great for a fun group ride and then it happened.

I had a major heart event - the widow maker - because 9 out of 10 die with this type of attack. I had no symptoms to my recollection. The night before, I had gone to the gym and did a strenuous stationary bike workout without issue. I never smoked. I was watching my diet because I was training for a big event later that year. None of the symptoms that would cause me to think I had heart disease.

But both my dad and brother had a heart attack in their late 30s or early 40s, and I was already in my 50s. I didn't smoke like they both had done, and I was steadily active my whole life. I was not susceptible in my mind!

Unfortunately, I had never done physicals with my doctor because I never felt any health issues that lingered or were obvious that needed attention beyond what I could do for myself. Well underneath the hood, my genetics were secretly working against me and my cholesterol levels were above the normal range. Over time, the plaque buildup around my heart took its toll!

So what I am saying is: Don't wait until it's too late.

Cyclist of the Month - February 2026

‘DEVANG IS BACK, AND HE IS CYCLIST OF THE MONTH

Everybody loves a good comeback story. We cheer for those who have fallen on tough times; we lend a hand to those reascending the mountain. And when the comeback belongs to someone close to us, it means so much more.

Right now, the Seminole Cyclists’ family is watching one of our most inspiring comebacks. Our friend Devang Shah has returned to our club rides after a nearly devastating health scare this past fall. We’ll get to those details in a minute. But, for now, let’s celebrate the hard work Devang is doing in his return to our club rides by honoring him as the SC Cyclist of the Month for February 2026.

Devang is back on our weekend rides, and he is working diligently on his trainer, which might have been unimaginable in September, when he suffered a serious injury to the carotid artery in his neck, after a mountain bike crash in Knoxville, TN. At first, Devang thought the extent of his injuries were cracked ribs. But, about a week later, he began experiencing neck pain and stroke-like symptoms that temporarily blinded him in one eye and paralyzed the opposite side of his body.

Being a medical doctor (ENT specialist), Devang recognized the severity of the symptoms and sought immediate treatment. He was diagnosed with a traumatic carotid artery dissection, with occlusion, which took about 10 days after his crash for symptoms to fully develop. After hospitalization and treatment, his neurological functions returned to normal and he was released.

Devang then suffered a setback, after a short walk, that landed him back in the hospital with recurring neurological symptoms. Fortunately, those resolved, but his work schedule and physical activity were greatly restricted. He started walking again in October, then was cleared by his neurosurgeon in November to slowly spin on his cycling trainer. His carotid artery had healed, with a small aneurysm.

While monitoring his symptoms and training, Devang gradually increased his indoor riding. Last month, he was cleared to ride outside again. On the Jan. 10 Signature Saturday, he rode a 44-miler with the SC 19-21 group. The first step of Devang’s outdoor cycling comeback was complete!

Since then, Devang has continued his outdoor and indoor riding, gradually pushing himself toward a return to his high level of fitness, before the crash. Meantime, he hasn’t lost sight of the severity of the entire ordeal, and he feels gratitude for his positive outcome.

“It’s going to be a slog getting 100 percent back, but I’m going to give it my all. I think I dodged a major bullet,” Devang said on Strava.

He expressed thanks to his club riding mates, saying it “would not be possible without the support from my Seminole Cyclists family.”

On behalf of the SC Board of Directors, please join us in congratulating Devang on the start of an inspiring comeback and on being our February Cyclist of the Month. Devang will receive a $20 gift card to a club sponsor of his choice, or $20 toward his fund raising for the 2026 Tour de Cure in Lake Nona.

Congratulations, Devang!
