SCCC E-BIKE PROVISIONSUnder specific conditions, SCCC allows E-bikes on club rides, in part because the state of Florida recognizes certain pedal-assist E-bikes as "bicycles.” The decision of our Board incorporates the following enforceable provisions for E-bikes on our club rides: 1. Category 1 and Cat 3 pedal-assist, road E-bikes are permitted on our rides. Category 2 (throttle, non-pedal) E-bikes are NOT allowed. Cat 1 and Cat 3 E-bikes may participate, provided: A) The bicycle’s frame, gearing and style must take the form of “road bicycle,” in keeping with our club’s road-riding motto to “We Build Strong Riders.” B) The rider must follow all SCCC safety rules and group-riding protocols. Like any cyclist who does not adhere to our rules or causes dangerous situations, an E-bike rider may be counseled by a marshal or asked to leave the ride. C) An E-bike rider should not join any SCCC group unless they have previously ridden in the same speed group without motor assist, because SCCC group-riding protocols are very specific and focused on safety. This is to help ensure that E-bike riders possess the handling and safety skills necessary to blend cohesively. Marshals should feel empowered to enforce this provision. D) E-bike riders should not take advantage of their pedal-assist to ride groups or segments above their physical or technical capacity. The spirit of allowing E-bikes is so those who might not otherwise be physically able to participate have a non-competitive opportunity to continue riding with us. Any questions or concerns should be directed to our Board members. |
